Laura Thomas’s work celebrates the beauty of yarn is its purest form; its essence and its innate character is brought to the fore and informs how it is to be used to create the resulting handwoven work. In making both ‘Cascade’ and ‘Soumac’, Laura saw an ideal opportunity to explore extremely labour-intensive hand manipulation techniques of knotting and wrapping as a perfect method to celebrate the extraordinary nature of the heavy, lustrous metallic white-gold yarn. The resulting artworks work dynamically with light and have a unique sense of volume, weight and surface texture stemming from the yarn’s precious nature.
