Martine works creatively with existing textiles - inspiring people to repair, repurpose and reimagine textiles they already own.
Textiles Reimagined is a full-day introduction to Japanese-inspired sashiko stitching and visible mending. It is designed for complete beginners as well as anyone with sewing experience who is interested in sustainable textiles and slow craft.
The morning session will introduce participants to the history and philosophy of sashiko, exploring how this traditional Japanese stitching technique developed as a practical method of repairing and strengthening garments. Martine will demonstrate the basic stitches and techniques before giving everyone the opportunity to practise and build confidence.
In the afternoon, participants will be able to apply what they've learned to create a small stitched textile piece, such as a coaster or table mat, using reclaimed fabrics. Along the way, we would also discuss how the same techniques can be used to repair and extend the life of clothing, encouraging a more mindful and sustainable approach to textiles.
All materials would be provided, including reclaimed fabrics, threads and needles.
