Textiles are a universal language, carrying stories, memories, and traditions across cultures. Inspired by the Tambalan project—named after the Javanese tambal motif, meaning “to patch” or “to mend”—this workshop explores cloth as a symbol of healing, care and connection through the power of art, reflection and conversation.
Beginning with an introduction to the Japanese Hapa Zome process, participants will transfer colour using flowers and plants grown by Claire in her allotment garden, creating vibrant botanical patterns while experiencing the restorative qualities of working with nature.
Using these naturally printed textiles, participants will create a small pocket bag and embellish it with simple hand embroidery, stitching a meaningful word, proverb, symbol, or motif inspired by personal memories, shared conversations, or someone they care about.
Inspired by textile traditions that honour storytelling and mending across cultures, the workshop offers a welcoming space to slow down, make together and reflect on identity, care, belonging and community. Through the gentle rhythm of hand stitching, participants will discover how creativity can connect people and give voice to shared experiences.
