Beate Gegenwart’s work is rooted in the exploration of identity, belonging and the intangible spaces between people and places. Working primarily with metal, etched copper and brass, she creates pieces that reflect on borders, rhythms and water.

She uses fine etching and photo-etching to create intricate, textured surfaces that are then delicately brushed and treated with techniques such as patination, brush plating, gilding and the use of pigments.

‘Indra’s Net’ is inspired by the poem of the same name by William Blake as well as the powerful, ever-changing movement of the sea surrounding her studio on the Gower Peninsula.
