On the final day of the Maker in Focus exhibition of printmaking by Ruth Thomas at Craft in the Bay, you are invited to join Ruth for a workshop full of collage and inky creativity to create your own beautiful prints!
Feel free to bring a drawing or photograph with you as the starting point for your print, which can be on any subject. Reflecting the themes of the exhibition, Ruth will bring a selection of additional photographs of the Clwydian Range of hills and the trees, plants and wildlife to be found there.
Ruth will provide examples of prints and explain the process of constructing a printing plate. Using a drawing or photograph as a starting point, we will make simple line drawings on card, then cut up the drawings to create printing plates using collage; additional lines and textures can be created with thread, tape and biro.
In the second half of the workshop, Ruth will demonstrate how to ink your plates with a roller and print them on an etching press, to make original prints to take home. Black and white prints look stunning but there is also the option to work with colour.
No previous experience required. Whether you’re an experienced artist or a complete beginner, this workshop welcomes everyone. All printmaking materials and equipment will be provided. If possible, wear old clothes you don’t mind getting inky. Disposable aprons and gloves will also be provided.
Ruth is a printmaker based in the Vale of Clwyd. She is a member of the RCA Conwy and the Makers Guild in Wales. She has been making prints using collage for many years and runs workshops for groups of all ages.
